The Roosevelt Island Operating Corporation (RIOC) announced the inauguration of an approximately 8,000 square foot, $2.1 million substantially rebuilt Roosevelt Island Youth Center in 2021(RIYC). According to the organization, the RIYC will act as a secure setting where young people can involve themselves in a range of enrichment, recreational, and instructional activities while the youth center encourages self-improvement, social growth, and teamwork.
According to Shelton Haynes, Roosevelt Island Operating Corporation recognizes the value of easily accessible education and youth programs. They are, therefore, in the process of modernizing and upgrading the Learning Center to make it more inviting, interactive, and educational. Children between the ages of seven and 18 will benefit from improvements such as a music den, a multipurpose lounge, activity studio, among others. Furthermore, the multifaceted facility includes a multi-media theater, gaming area, STEM lab, and educational garden.
Beyond modernization and beautification, the youth center enables young people to explore their interests, embrace career and college planning, and engage in community development and engagement. A vital function of the Learning Center is to foster a sense of community and connect youth with their neighborhood, enhancing their emotional, physical, intellectual, and social well-being. Along with sports activities, participants will also learn about safety and citizenship, empowering them to participate actively in their communities.
Under his leadership, Shelton Haynes has led low-performing departments into high-performing ones grounded on quantifiable key performance indicators and compliance audits.
