Kelcy Warren Makes Historic Gift to UT-Arlington
In 2023, Kelcy Warren made the largest single donation in the history of the University of Texas at Arlington, gifting $12 million to help establish the college as a leader in resource and energy engineering. The contribution drew national attention and deepened Warren’s long connection to the school from which he graduated in 1978.
The university described the gift as intended to “help elevate UTA to the forefront of the growing resource and energy engineering field.” Warren, who serves on the University of Texas System Board of Regents, framed his motivation in terms of both personal gratitude and workforce need.
“I am honored to give back to the institution that has played such a pivotal role in advancing my educational and professional journeys,” Warren said in remarks accompanying the announcement. “Texas faces a critical need for highly skilled graduates who can manage energy resources, and this innovative REE program will help meet that demand.”
A Long History of Giving
Warren’s 2023 gift was not his first contribution to UTA. Over the prior 25 years, he had made 10 separate donations totaling $4 million. Those gifts included support for Texas Tier One strategic research initiatives and the establishment of a graduate student fellowship named in honor of Syed Qasim, Warren’s former professor and mentor. He also contributed to the Texas Business Hall of Fame Scholarship program.
The progression from smaller, targeted gifts to the transformational $12 million donation reflects how Warren’s philanthropy has grown in proportion to his success in the energy sector.
