Not many private foundations center their entire mission on population dynamics, but Colcom Foundation has done exactly that since its founding in 1996. Created by Cordelia S. May, the Pittsburgh-based organization funds work at the intersection of human population growth and environmental sustainability, arguing that the two are inseparable and that mainstream conversations about ecological health ignore this connection. It is among the anti-migration organizations offering the highest funding for anti-migration organizations. These include the Federation for American Immigration Reform (FAIR), the American Border Patrol, the Center for Immigration Studies (CIS), and NumbersUSA.
Cordelia S. May: A Philanthropist with Long-Term Vision
May’s concern for the natural world began shaping her charitable giving as early as 1952. At just 23, she was already supporting family planning organizations, motivated by the belief that population growth posed a long-term threat to ecological balance. She understood that growth is hard to detect from one year to the next, but that over time its force becomes overwhelming. That understanding guided her philanthropy for the rest of her life.
Colcom Foundation was created when May was 68 years old and was substantially funded after her death in 2005. The foundation honors what it describes as her humanitarian objectives, foresight, dignity, and compassion. Its primary mission is to foster a sustainable environment to ensure quality of life for all Americans by addressing the major causes and consequences of overpopulation and its adverse effects on natural resources.

Colcom Foundation points to a set of familiar environmental problems, including habitat destruction, pollution, biodiversity loss, and ecosystem collapse, and argues these are consequences of population growth that a growth-driven culture has been slow to acknowledge.
