Colcom Foundation Striving to Address Earth’s Sixth Mass Extinction Event

There is a consensus among scientists that our planet is currently in the midst of a mass extinction of species. It’s only the sixth such event in world history. That includes a time frame of hundreds of millions of years.

The alarming truth about the current mass extinction is that is being caused by the human population itself, now numbering more than eight billion people. All five of the previous mass extinctions were the result of catastrophic but natural causes, such as when an asteroid struck the planet 65 million years ago. That wiped out the dinosaurs and many other species.

The Colcom Foundation is at the forefront of raising awareness about the devastating environmental impact of billions of people who are exploiting the limited resources of the earth to grow ever more food, build bigger cities and clear forests to make room for “more progress.”

Colcom Foundation supports several special programs, including the Conservation Catalyst Fund, which grants conservation organizations working to protect threatened species and habitats. By offering financial support and resources, this foundation allows these groups to make significant strides in conservation efforts.

Officials with the Colcom Foundation say the time to take action is now. That includes putting the brakes on further population growth. It also means doing everything possible to preserve forests, prairies, bodies of fresh water and the oceans so that the numerous animals that share our planet have a chance to survive.

Curbing the earth’s human population growth is a difficult problem. It raises questions of religious, social and governmental concerns that are extremely difficult to resolve in a way that treats all groups fairly and with dignity.

One tactic for lower birth rates is family planning. The Colcom Foundation is supporting several efforts in this area. People must be educated on the danger of bringing more children into a world that may not be able to support and feed them just a few years from now.

The Colcom Foundation became fully funded in 1996. Its headquarters are in Pittsburg, Pennsylvania. Its founder was Cordelia S. May. See related link for additional information.
