Alliance Defending Freedom: Protecting Everyones Legal Rights Whether Popular of Not
The Alliance Defending Freedom pronounces on its website to be the “world’s largest legal organization” dedicated to five principles: religious freedom, free speech, sanctity of life, parental rights, and God’s design for marriage and family.
In existence since 1994, this group has represented numerous religious groups, students on numerous campuses, and internationally, joined the fight to eliminate and combat genocide. Their international work also concentrates on religious freedom in countries which do not allow for free exercise of religion. The website goes into detail concerning the various categories that they concentrate on in their legal work.
One of the key tenets of the Alliance Defending Freedom is religious freedom. This is protected in the First Amendment to the United States Constitution. As the organization makes clear, it applies to all religions or no religion. It also includes protecting the rights of people who may be unpopular or in a minority. The alliance is dedicated to that principle, and they continue to fight for the rights of all religious people.
The arena of free speech, another First Amendment right, has the alliance representing college students who wish to exercise their freedom. This involves distributing brochures, for example, that the college authorities do not wish to have placed on their facility.
The alliance’s work in the area of sanctity of life includes defending the right to a natural death, or more appropriately, the right to live despite disabilities.
The organization’s work for parental rights involves the principle that parents, within limits, should have the right to raise their children without interference from outside forces such as government.
The Alliance Defending Freedom has taken cases involving the above legal principles to the United States Supreme Court which is ultimate body which determines the law. The alliance remains in the forefront of defending key principles under the law. See this article for additional information.
